Dancer

The profession that uses the artistic expression of dance

StagePool Dansare

What do dancers do?

Dancers work with their bodies as the main instrument for artistic expression in the art form of dance. Dancers can be trained in a variety of techniques and methods, but classical ballet is a basic technique that many professional dancers first learn. Much of the terminology in dance, that is, the expressions used to define positions and movements, comes from classical ballet. Other popular techniques, such as jazz ballet and contemporary dance, have evolved from this. Dancers often perform a set combination of movements called choreography, but may also move more freely in improvisation. Dancers often perform professionally in musicals, shows, on television, and in music videos.

What do dancers need to know?

Most professional dancers have many years of classical training as a foundation. It is a strength for dancers to have danced many dance techniques and learned different dance styles to become a truly broad and experienced dancer. To become a good dancer, in addition to strength, agility, balance and technique, one needs the ability to convey one's emotions and messages with the goal of touching an audience. Many dancers are self-taught, especially in modern dance such as street dance. However, many begin their professional career with a dance class, usually as a child.
