What is a ballet dancer?

Ballet dancers are dancers of modern or classical ballet. Ballet dancers are trained in classical ballet, and before the professional career can begin, there are many years of technical training, usually from childhood. A male ballet dancer is called a ballet dancer and a female ballet dancer is called a ballerina.

In ballet companies, there are four levels of ballet dancers:

  • female: prima ballerina/male master dancer or prima ballerino
  • first soloists
  • second soloists
  • dancer (ensemble)

What does a ballet dancer do?

Professional ballet dancers work in a ballet company as part of an ensemble with many other dancers. The ballet company may be independent or part of an opera company. The company performs both classical and modern works choreographed by a choreographer. A ballet dancer's workday includes daily training and rehearsals for new pieces and performances.

Ballet dancers' careers are usually relatively short, and retirement often occurs in the 40s.
