The profession of artistic administration in a larger cultural organization
The Head of artistic administration is the person responsible for managing artists in a larger organization such as a television station, record company, or music festival. These are usually organizations that require a very large number of artists for their productions.
As an Head of artistic administration, you are responsible for all the artists in a production, ensuring that the staff in your department handles all contact with the artists or their agents, managers, or other representatives regarding planning, preparation, materials, finances, and logistics, but you are also responsible for the artists' accommodations and overall experience during the production. Duties may include managing performances, stage attire, travel, accommodations, transportation, interviews, press conferences, licensing, and other rights, but also making sure, for example, that proper compensation/honoraria/fees are paid. The exact duties of operations directors in such a department depend very much on the structure of the organization and the industry in which they work.
You need experience in both administration and working with artists. Perhaps you've worked as an assistant or manager for one or more artists and feel it's time to take on more responsibility. You'll be able to pull together all the threads of managing artists into one organization. You're also responsible for making sure you have the right people and expertise to handle the administration. As the Head of artistic administration you must be straightforward and clear, have the courage to make decisions, and be a good communicator.
