Theatre producer

The engine of the theater, which is ultimately responsible for the success of a production

Teaterproducent

Theater producers report directly to theater management and are responsible for the success of a stage production, from conception to opening night, and then on an ongoing basis for maintaining the playbill and all related contingencies.

What is the job of theater producers?

Theatrical producers hold all the strings of a theatrical production and ensure that all departments of a theater are working according to plan. Responsibilities include organizing castings and auditions, recruitment, budgeting, financing, marketing, ticketing, and even tour planning.

In addition, theater producers work with the artistic direction of the production, which usually consists of directing, choreography, set design, costume design, and technology such as sound and lighting, as well as the ensemble of actors, musicians, and other artists.

How do I become a theater producer?

Many theater producers have extensive experience and training in project management and leadership and have a natural talent for organization. As a leader, you deal with many people, so interpersonal skills, teamwork, problem solving and communication are important. Producers must be familiar with financial issues as well as personnel and time management.

Since theater is a very artistic workplace, theater producers must be able to speak "the same language" as their staff. It is a great advantage if you as a theater producer have an artistic background and can be involved in the creative development process of a theater production. In German-speaking countries, there is no classic training path. Mostly there is a commercial, academic qualification, which in combination with a love of art, a great sense of responsibility and sensitivity makes good theater producers.
