What is the job of decorators?

Decorators or theater decorators have the artistic responsibility of designing the stage decorations in a theater. They work on decorating and embellishing the sets of a play. Decorators must be distinguished from set designers, who design the overall set. Decorators work in detail and contribute to the aesthetics of a theater. This includes, for example, the realistic, but also the fantastic design of a set through various objects, pieces of furniture or through colors and patina. In smaller productions, set decorators' duties are part of the set designers' duties.

What do decorators need to know?

Decorators work closely with the director to get as close as possible to their idea of the emotional atmosphere in the space in conjunction with artistic expression. Together, they design the set for the scenes and the framework in which actors develop their characters. Decorators are often responsible for the layout, construction, choice of technology and materials to create the right character for a play. It's a time-consuming and stressful profession, and as a decorators you often work under time constraints, especially just before opening night. If you want to become a stage designer, it is advisable to complete an internship at a theater before you start your studies in order to gain the necessary stage and lighting knowledge.
