Image technician

Filmmaker who is responsible for image technology, image quality and security in a film production

Bildtekniker StagePool

Image technicians are the professional group that is ultimately responsible for the image technology, image quality and safety of a film production.

What is the job of image technicians?

Image technicians work closely with the camera crew to ensure that the image on a shoot, or on a film production in general, meets the creative goals of the cinematographer. The cinematographer has a vision that image technicians must implement technically and digitally. Image technicians work on workflow, systematization, camera settings, signal integrity, and image manipulation to achieve the highest image quality. Safeguarding and secure handling of data is also a very important task that image technicians are responsible for.

What do image technicians need to know?

You must have a very good knowledge of image and film technology, especially in the digital world, but you must also be creative and innovative to help the camera operator find a unique visual language. The role involves managing a camera team and requires good teamwork as you will be working with many other departments in a film production, not least camera and direction. You should have extensive professional experience in film production and have worked your way up through a passionate interest in imagery and a solid technical film education.
