Television studio technician who switches between images on the screen during a live broadcast
Video-mixer is one of the many professions that make up the production team of a television production.
Video-mixers work at the mixing board in the control room of the television studio or on the TV bus, where they assemble images from various cameras, graphics and other picture sources to virtually control what goes into the live broadcast. The closest people to video-mixers sit in the picture control room, where the pace and timing of the broadcast is determined by how and when the pictures are arranged. Video-mixers may also work in post-production, which is when film and television are edited and cut together after the recording is complete.
In this profession, you work primarily on live television broadcasts, and that means working in the center of the action, because almost anything can happen during a live broadcast. The work environment requires stress resistance and the ability to have many irons in the fire at the same time. The goal, of course, is to help make a television broadcast as good as it can be. As a video-mixer, you'll need to be highly collaborative, quick-witted, focused, fast-paced and solution-oriented. Be prepared to work inconvenient hours such as evenings and weekends. It is also common for studio technicians to work freelance. You should have training as a studio technician with a focus on live broadcasts.
